FINDING & DESTROYING TERMITES
You’re in luck! Compared to other parts of the US, termites aren’t as common in our service areas (the areas in and around Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell, Mobridge, SD; and South Dakota & Sheridan, WY). But we do find them. Typically, they show up during a remodel or in an old pile of wood near a house.
Termites typically appear in early spring, range between .8 to 1 in., and are white or light brown. You probably won’t see them, since they love to live in dark, moist areas. If you spot them, you might think they are carpenter ants. The key physical difference is that termites’ bodies only have two sections, while carpenter ants have three.
Termite damage can be costly. So, if you think you may have them, don’t wait to give us a call!
Signs that you may have termites include:
- Darkening, blistering, or hollowed-out wood structures near your home (stumps, wood piles, fences, etc.)
- They show up next door–if your neighbors have them, you might too
- Mud tubes that appear on the inside wall near your foundation
- Soft wood in your house
- Mud in holes and cracks in your foundation–termites could have put the mud there
If your house has a history of termites, it’s likely they’ll return. Now that you know what to look for, you can call one of our experts as soon as you spot one of the signs.
Due to the intensive inspection process, a termite inspection fee will be charged. If we find termites, and a treatment service is scheduled with us, we’ll waive the inspection fee.
We partner with several realtors to provide WDI (Wood Destroying Insect) Inspections for potential buyers and property owners. To treat the termites, we drill tiny holes in the sidewalk surrounding your property. Once we finish the treatment, we fill the holes. You won’t be able to tell we were ever there!
After treatment, you can help keep termites away from your home by:
- Reducing wetness and moisture in and around your house by:
- Installing gutters, splash blocks, and downspouts to keep water away from your house
- Ventilating your crawl space to minimize the humidity
- Getting rid of old tree trunks, roots, wood piles, and other unused wooden items near your home’s foundation
- Inspecting your home’s foundation for signs of termite damage
Don’t let termites consume your home! If you spot signs of termite damage or are concerned you may have them, call one of our expert technicians today.
