We always say, “when you see one rat, there are probably many more nearby!” Rats are natural breeders beginning when they are only 5-7 weeks old. These disgusting rodents thrive in silage piles, feedlots, and in granaries. Typically, we see rats bothering folks who are on agricultural properties throughout our service areas (the areas in and around Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell, Mobridge, SD; and South Dakota & Sheridan, WY).

Rats are white, black, brown, or gray and typically live for two or three years. While they appear similar to mice, they are about two-three times larger. Also, rats have blunter noses than mice and their tails are hairless and scaly, as opposed to furry.

Because rats like to rummage throughout your house for food, they can leave disgusting grease stains wherever they go. They also love eating your food and scurrying out of their dark hiding spots when you least expect them.

We use bait to treat rats. Since rats are skeptical little guys, they will typically wait around two weeks before eating any bait.

• Sealing cracks around doors and windows 
• Keeping decorations in a tightly sealed container – rats love living in boxes that you carry in and out of your house!
