Have you ever tried to relax at the end of a long day, only to be shocked to see a spider crawling up your wall? There’s a reason these eight-legged arachnids are commonly featured in horror stories. Besides being disgusting, their bites can hurt (and sometimes cause allergic reactions).

Spiders are no strangers to our service areas (the areas in and around Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell, Mobridge, SD; and South Dakota & Sheridan, WY).

Here are the most common ones we see:

• Wolf spider: This hairy, dark brown or black spider can be between ¼ in. and 2 in. It has pale stripes and markings, long legs, and a distinctive eye pattern. The eye pattern consists of a top row with two eyes, a middle row with two larger eyes, and a bottom row with four smaller eyes.
• Orb-weaver spider: This is reddish-brown or gray. It also has two humps near the front of its somewhat triangular abdomen.
• Garden spider: This spider is often found in gardens or fields making circular webs that can have a diameter of up to two feet. The most common garden spider in our service area is black and yellow.
• Daddy long-legs: Like its name suggests, this spider has really long legs and a small oval body.
• Crab spider: This spider ranges from .1 to .5 of an inch long with a flattened round or oval body and legs that jut out from its sides. It’s typically brown or dull gray and can walk in any direction.
• Jumping spider: This furry spider has eyes on the back of its head–just like many moms claim to have. It’s less than an inch long, with four pairs of eyes, including a large pair at the front.
• Grass spider: This has a brownish-yellow coloring and two black stripes along its abdomen.
• Black widows: This shiny black spider can live in dark corners of your house where the humidity is high. It’s easy to identify by its bright red hourglass marking on the underside of its abdomen. The length of this spider typically ranges from 3 to 10 mm.

Fortunately, none of these spiders are poisonous. But all can be annoying to have indoors.

In our service area, spiders start to come inside around March and April and continue to make their way indoors until we have consistent, hard freezing temperatures (around October and November). That’s why it’s so important that you have us spray for spiders before winter sets in. If they come inside and we haven’t already sprayed for them, you’ll likely see them the rest of the winter.

There are multiple ways spiders can enter your house, including:

• Through broken screens in windows and doors
• Through door sweeps
• Through gaps around windows and doors
• Through cracks and gaps around your home’s foundation
• Through unsealed windows and doors
• By hitching a ride to outdoor plants and flowers that you bring indoors
