Why does it always seem that flies find us in the most inopportune time – when we’re trying to sleep, eating a meal, or entertaining guests? Regardless of when they choose to make their appearance, they’re plain annoying! Unfortunately, they are a common site in our service areas (that is, the areas in and around Aberdeen, Huron, Mitchell, Mobridge, SD; and South Dakota & Sheridan, WY).
Cluster flies look similar to houseflies, except they are larger, have spotted wings, and contain yellow hairs on their thorax (which is located between their head and abdomen).
They can come inside through vents that connect to your attic. Or they can enter through tiny cracks and unsealed openings around your home, such as those surrounding doors and window frames. This typically happens between late fall and early spring. Once the flies are inside, they cluster in large groups in dark, unfrequented areas such as attics, walls, and spare rooms.
When the weather warms up, they think it’s spring and they come into the rest of the house, often flying around windows. This is when you realize how much of a nuisance they can be, as numerous flies break out of their cluster and into your home.
Having cluster flies may be the result of the following:
- You have cracks and gaps around your home
- Your screens, windows, and doors aren’t sealed properly
- You didn’t get a fall spray treatment for these flies
Generally, our fall spray is the best service for cluster flies, but we recommend getting a head start with the annual insect program! Once the weather is consistently at freezing temperatures, we won’t be able to get chemicals to them, and if you don’t spray for them, the flies will live in your house all winter long. That’s because the cluster flies are likely living in your insulation and walls.
